Shool Tankeshwar Temple, Varanasi

Location
Shool Tankeshwar is located at Dasaswamedh ghat steps, Varanasi. The temple is quite famous and also known as Bada Linga.

Legend
According to Kashi Khand, Chapter 69, the place where Lord Shiva wore the skin of Gajasur after slaying him was called Rudra Vasam. (Kindly refer to Krithi Vaseshwar)
Once the Lord, in his form as Krithi Vaseshwar, was sitting alongwith Goddess Parvati when Nandi offered his prayers and stated that there were 68 places of worship dedicated to Lord Shiva in this holy place. Various Idols/Shiv Lings have been brought from several other places by Nandi and installed in Kashi.

Near Prayag teerth one can find Shool Tankeshwar Linga. A devotee who takes bath in Prayag teerth and worships Shool Tankeshwar will attain the benefits equivalent to hundred times the benefits which would have accrued to him had he taken bath in Prayag (Sangam-Allahabad). Besides, the devotees will find all round happiness and attain Moksha.

When River Ganga approached Kashi with a violent force, Lord Shiva threw his Trishul (Trident) hard into the ground, just before the entry point to the south of Kashi. By this action, Ganga had to slow down her force and she agreed to flow gently through Kashi and that she would always remain in Kashi, giving happiness to the residents. Scientifically speaking, the River Ganga is perennial in Kashi and at some points, even during the dry summer, the depth is over 130 feet. Accordingly, people believe that Shool Tankeshwar temple is at a point almost 2 kms south of Assi.
But according to Kashi Khand, the place has been mentioned in the vicinity of Prayag teerth, which is almost a part of Dasaswamedh ghat.

Types of Pooja
The place of worship is open from 6AM to 12 Noon and from 05.30PM to 10PM. Devotees can perform pooja on their own.

Location of Kashi Vishwanath Jyotirlinga

The name Varanasi has its origin possibly from the names of the two rivers Varuna and Assi, for the old city lies in the north shores of the Ganges bounded by its two tributaries, the Varuna and the Assi, with the Ganges being to its south.
Through the ages, Varanasi was variously known as Avimuktaka, Anandakanana, Mahasmasana, Surandhana, Brahma Vardha, Sudarsana, Ramya, and Kasi.
In the Rigveda, the city was referred to as Kasi or Kashi, "the luminous one" as an allusion to the city's historical status as a centre of learning, literature, art and culture. Kashikhand described the glory of the city in 15, 000 verses in the Skanda Purana. A tribe called kasha used to live therefore, the city was also known as Kashi. Near Kashi, Ganga flows in the shape of a bow. Hence it acquired special importance. Varanasi is located in Uttar Pradesh, in the Gangetic plains. The city is also called Benaras.

Temple

A Shiva temple has been mentioned in Puranas including Kashi Khanda (section) of Skanda Purana. In 490 AD, the Kashi Vishwanath Temple was built. In 11th Century AD, Hari Chandra constructed a temple. Muhammad Ghori destroyed it along with other temples of Varanasi during his raid in 1194. Reconstruction of the temple started soon after. This was demolished by Qutb-ud-din Aibak. After Aibak's death the temple was again rebuilt by Hindu rajas. In 1351 it was destroyed again by Firuz Shah Tughlaq. The temple was rebuilt in 1585 by Todar Mal, the Revenue Minister of Akbar's Court. Aurangzeb ordered its demolition in 1669 and constructed Gyanvapi Mosque, which still exists alongside the temple. Traces of the old temple can be seen behind the mosque. It is said that the Shiv-Linga was thrown in the 'well'. There is a small well in the temple called the Jnana Vapi (the wisdom well) and it is believed that the Jytorlinga was hidden in the well to protect it at the time of invasion. It is said that the main priest of the temple had jumped in the well with the Shiv Ling in order to protect the (Jyoti-r) Ling from the invaders. So the original Shiv-linga now resides in the well. In the year 1785 a Naubatkhana was built up in front of the Temple by the then Collector Mohd Ibrahim Khan at the instance of Governor General Warren Hastings. The current temple was built by Ahilya Bai Holkar, the Hindu Maratha queen of Malwa kingdom, in 1780. The temple spire and the two domes are plated with 1000 kg of gold donated by the Sikh Maharaja Ranjit Singh of Punjab, in 1835 Third dome still remains uncovered, Ministry of culture & Religious affairs of U.P. Govt. is taking keen interest for gold plating of third dome of Temple. A huge bell hangs in the temple. It was donated by the King of Nepal.. In 1785 AD, the then King of Kashi, Mansaram and his son Belvant Singh built many more temples near Varanasi. On January 28, 1983 the temple was taken over by the Govt. of Uttar Pradesh and it's management ever since stands entrusted to a Trust with Dr. Vibhuti Narayan Singh (former Kashi Naresh) as president and an Executive Committee with Divisional Commissioner as Chairman.
The temple complex consists of a series of smaller shrines, located in a small lane called the Vishwanatha Galli, near the river. The linga the main deity at the shrine is 60 cm tall and 90 cm in circumference housed in a silver altar. There are small temples for Kaalbhairav, Dhandapani, Avimukteshwara, Vishnu, Vinayaka, Sanishwara, Virupaksha and Virupaksh Gauri in the complex.
The Temple has been visited by all great saints- Adi Shankaracharya, Ramkrishna Paramhansa, Swami Vivekanand, Goswami Tulsidas, Maharshi Dayanand Saraswati, Gurunanak and several other spiritual personalities.

The Legend of Kashi

It is believed Goddess Parvathi's mother felt ashamed that her son-in-law had no decent dwelling. To please Parvathi Devi, Siva asked Nikumbha to provide him with a dwelling place at Kashi.
On the request of Nikumbha, Aunikumbha a Brahmin made Divodas construct a temple for the Lord here. The pleased Lord granted boons to all his devotees. But Divodas was not blessed with a son. The angered Divodas demolished the structure. Nikubha cursed that the area would be devoid of people. When the place was emptied Lord Siva once again took residence here permanently. The Lord along with Parvathi Devi once again started blessing his devotees with wonderful boons.
Parvathi Devi was so pleased that she offered food (annam) to one and all and hence is worshipped as Annapoorani. The Lord himself is seen with a bowl in his hands asking for annam from the seated Devi at the Devi's shrine adajacent to Viswanathar's shrine. This is considered to be one of the 52 Sakthipeedams (the place where Parvathi's left hand fell, when her corpse was cut by Mahavishnu's sudarsana chakram). Behind the temple is situated the temple of Dhundhiraja Ganapathi

Sarnath is a place of Buddhist pilgrimage. The site where Buddha gave his first sermon and thereby founded Buddhism is marked by Dhamek Stupa. Buddhist traditions worldwide have each built their country's architectural style of Buddhist temple here.
Varanasi is one of the holiest places in Buddhism too, being one of the four pilgrimage sites said to have been designated by Gautama Buddha himself (the others being Kushinagar, Bodh Gaya, and Lumbini). At Sarnath, the site of the deer park, Gautama Buddha is said to have given his first sermon about the basic principles of Buddhism. The Dhamek Stupa is one of the few pre-Ashokan stupas still standing, though only its foundation remains. Also remaining is the Chaukhandi Stupa commemorating the spot where Buddha met his first disciples (in the 5th century or earlier, BC). An octagonal tower was built later there. There is an Archeological museum at Sarnath.

Jainism in Varanasi

Jain Ghat, Varanasi
Varanasi is a pilgrimage site for Jains along with Hindus and Buddhists. It is believed to be the birthplace of Suparshvanath, Shreyansanath, and Parshva, who are respectively the seventh, eleventh, and twenty-third Jain Tirthankars and as such Varanasi is a holy city for Jains. Shree Parshvanath Digambar Jain Tirth Kshetra (Digambar Jain Temple) is situated in Bhelupur, Varanasi. This temple is of great religious importance to Jain Religion. Parshvanath was the twenty-third Tirthankara in Jainism in the 9th century BCE, traditionally (877 – 777 BCE. He is the earliest Jain leader generally accepted as a historical figure. He was a nobleman belonging to the Kshatriya caste. He lived in Varanasi in India around 800 BCE and is the most popular object of Jain devotion. Varanasi is the birthplace of.
Hindus regard Kashi as one of the Shakti Peethas, and that Vishalakshi Temple stands on the spot where Goddess Sati's earrings fell. Hindus of the Shakti sect make a pilgrimage to the city because they regard the river Ganges itself as the Goddess Shakti. Adi Shankara wrote his commentaries on Hinduism here, leading to the great Hindu revival. Vaishnavism and Shaivism have always co-existed in Varanasi harmoniously. Vishalakshi Temple of Divine Mother Sati, stands at Meer Ghat just behind Vishwanath Temple.
Manikarni
When Sati's body was cut to pieces by the sudarshana chakra of Lord Vishnu, it is said that karna kundala (earring) of Sati fell here. Hence Devi here is also known as Manikarni. Some pundits feel that karna kundala is merely an ornament and not part of the body. Therefore this place can at best be considered as a upapeetha, a minor or sub-centre. Another version says that this is a shakti peetha only because one of the three eyes akshi fell here. However it is amongst the 18 undisputed shakti peeths. As the divine eye can perceive the entire universe, Mother here is called Vishalakshi, the vast-eyed. Lord Shiva is known as Kalabhairava.
